The Town of Highland Beach is located in the southern portion of eastern Palm Beach County, just south and southeast of Delray Beach, and north and northeast of Boca Raton. Highland Beach encompasses just 1.1 total square miles and lies between the southeast’s two major bodies of water; the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Intracoastal Waterway to the west. The Town’s “main street” is a beautiful tree-lined stretch of Florida’s state road A1A also known as Ocean Boulevard.
Highland Beach is a residential community with a year-round population of only 4,000 residents which increases to double its size during the winter months by those who list their northern homes as their official place of residence. Residents are composed of approximately 80% retirees and 20% persons employed or engaged in business enterprises in Palm Beach and Broward Counties.
The Town provides general municipal services such as police protection and a library, as well as water and wastewater utility service. The Town also provides, through contract, fire protection, code enforcement, building inspection, solid waste, and postal services. However there are no shops, restaurants, or other commercial enterprises in this community filled with multi-million dollar waterfront estates and luxurious oceanfront condominium complexes.
The name “Highland Beach” was chosen because the land rose 20 to 25 feet above high tide, relatively higher than other portions of the dune crest in the area.
Land values in 1945 were $45 a foot, including the land opposite on the Intracoastal, as that was considered valueless because of the swamp and mangroves! Today the value is in excess of $1000,000 a "front" foot!
